What does a solar inverter do?

A solar inverter converts the electricity generated by the panels from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Direct current is electricity that consistently flows in one direction, while alternating current varies periodically. The inverter changes the current to AC so it can change from high to low voltages easily. Lower voltages are used in homes because it is safer, while higher voltages are good for sending electricity over long distances, i.e., to and from the grid, if/when this is needed.
